I just finished reading, Untangle Your Emotions: Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It, written by Jennie Allen. She wrote this book with the intention of helping people realize that it is okay to express and acknowledge our emotions.
Allowing ourselves to feel, whether it is sadness, anger, happiness or fear, gives us opportunity to heal and mend. God made us as emotional people, and He himself had emotions, and so we must come to terms that it is okay to feel.
Allen brings her readers through a process that helps us to embrace our feelings, to give ourselves time to process them (figuring out what they are and how they started) and to be vulnerable and share our feelings with others. It is through this process that we can understand ourselves better, be encouraged and make the choices that are needed for us to heal.
This book resonated with me especially when Allen broached the topic of the importance of not pushing down our emotions and just living life thinking we do not have time to deal with them. She explains that even if we “ignore” them, they will still bother us. They will stress us out and do stuff to our body that will not be good. But if we deal with them as soon as possible by sharing with friends, praying about them, going through healing, we can move on in life not just in survival mode but in the abundance of life that Jesus came for us to live.
I encourage anyone going through a stressful time of life and who is feeling too busy to deal with that stress, to grab a copy of this book and take a moment each day to read a chapter – allowing yourself to go through a healing journey. You matter. You are worth it.
You will be the better for it with the Holy Spirit and Truth guiding you forward in victory.
